When is the right time to replace your car battery?

Car problems can be a big pain and sometimes happen at the worst times. One common culprit is a battery that's run its course. If your car's battery is three or more years old and you're having issues with it, it's likely a good decision to replace it. But factors like driving habits, weather, and the type of battery you have can also influence when you need to replace the battery.

Here are signs that will help you determine if your battery is ready for replacement:

  • The engine turns over slowly when starting — or not at all.

If you have a slow engine crank, it's likely the result of bad car battery cables or the starter itself, or perhaps the alternator isn't charging the battery properly. But if it's just the battery, check for corrosion on the terminals and clean them if necessary. If that doesn't work, get your car serviced.

  • Your headlights are dimming.

Have you noticed your headlights dimming as you idle? It could be a weak alternator or faulty voltage regulator in your car's electrical system. Still, it could also mean a dying battery that can no longer hold its charge properly.

  • The engine won't turn over after repeated attempts.

When you're repeatedly turning over an engine that refuses to start, you're depleting the battery's power reserves until it can no longer turn over the engine. In this case, jump-starting may work temporarily — but only until your battery drains again.
