Warning Signs You Need New Brakes

Most drivers ignore the condition of their brakes until they experience a problem. But if you take a proactive approach, you can catch issues before they become serious.

Here are some warning signs that indicate it's time to have your brakes checked:

Grinding or screeching sounds when you apply the brakes: That is usually caused by brake pads worn down too far, which can happen quickly if you drive on rough roads or in bad weather conditions. Stop driving immediately and consult a qualified European car specialist if you hear this grinding noise.

Sudden brake failure: Suppose your BMW car suddenly loses braking ability without warning. In that case, it may indicate something is wrong with the braking system — possibly including brake fluid leaks or a failed brake line. This type of failure could cause an accident, so get it checked out immediately by a professional BMW mechanic in Melbourne who can determine what's causing the problem and fix it accordingly.

The brake pedal feels spongy: The brake fluid level is low and needs to be topped off. Many modern cars use a single-piston system for each wheel. If this happens, make sure that you give yourself plenty of room on either side of your vehicle before coming to a stop so that there's enough room for all four pistons to extend fully during braking.

Excessive brake pedal travel: When your brakes need service, the pedal will go to the floor before stopping (and it'll take longer than usual). That means there's too much air in the system, and it needs to be bled out so that there's less space between each piston inside the master cylinder.

Another sign that your brake pads or shoes need replacement is if they have worn down unevenly or have uneven wear patterns. Incorrectly installed rotors can often cause this, but it can also be caused by a warped rotor, which will require replacement.
